‘AHS: 1984’ | WHAT WE KNOW (JUNE 2019)

TITLE, THEME, SETTING, FILMING DATE & AIR DATE

The ninth season of American Horror Story is titled 1984.

It is set to premiere September 18 2019 on FX.

Filming is set to begin on Monday 8th of July in Los Angeles, California.

As confirmed by trustworthy sources, the season’s primary setting will be at a summer camp. Writer Tim Minear and Director Jen Lynch have both confirmed that it will be inspired by 80’s horror slasher flicks as well as primarily being set in the 80’s.

TEASERS

Only one teaser has been released to promote 1984 so far, and that was released in April by show creator Ryan Murphy on Instagram to announce the title of the season

CAST

Ryan Murphy made the first hint towards possible 1984 casting when he revealed in November 2018 that he was “cooking up something good” for actors Cody Fern (Apocalypse), Darren Criss (Hotel) and Finn Wittrock (Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke). He didn’t confirm what show he was writing them into, however, it is strongly rumored to be the upcoming season of AHS, especially as the cast will consist of primarily younger looking actors to play teens (despite them being older, as per with AHS – see a 30 year old Cody Fern playing a 15 year old Michael in Apocalypse) to populate the summer camp.

Ryan Murphy later took to Instagram once more in February 2019 to announce that Olympic gold medalist Gus Kenworthy will be making his acting debut in 1984 alongside Emma Roberts (Coven, Freak Show, Cult, Apocalypse), who will be playing his character’s love interest.

Sarah Paulson (who has appeared in every season of AHS) revealed in an interview that she “thinks” she will be returning for 1984, however, she seemed uncertain. It was later announced that she will be starring alongside Cate Blanchett in FX show Mrs America which is filming until November in Canada, meaning if she appears in 1984 then it will be in a limited capacity, which is also what trustworthy inside sources have suggested.

Evan Peters (who has so far appeared in all seasons) confirmed to Extra TV at Wonder Con that he won’t be appearing in 1984, as he wants to “take a break”. He later revealed in an interview that the decision was made for his own mental health, as he found that the characters that he portrays in AHS have affected him on a personal level, stating that he prefers to play lighter roles over “demanding” darker, more evil roles such as sociopath Kai Anderson in Cult.

Comedian and actor Billy Eichner (Cult, Apocalypse) confirmed to a fan on Twitter that he “can’t do” AHS this year, likely due to The Lion King‘s promotional commitments, in which he has a starring role.

Apocalypse star Billy Porter also later confirmed to a fan on Instagram that he won’t be appearing in 1984 due to POSE filming commitments.

Very trustworthy inside sources later confirmed that Cody Fern (Apocalypse), Leslie Grossman (Cult, Apocalypse) and Billie Lourd (Cult, Apocalypse) will be returning for 1984.

Cody Fern spoke on 1984 prior to this revelation, gushing over the 80’s: “I love slasher films of the 80’s. I was born in 1988, so I kind of missed that time, but when you’re a kid in the next era, you always look back at the era before. I really love the underground, punk world of the bliss kids. It was the birth of David Bowie with these semi-drag looks that are so artistic. It’s this incredible world that was born in this underground club. In terms of slashers, that’s a frightening genre. I don’t know if I’m a person to run around and scream, but there’s a real skill in it. Jamie Lee Curtis is the mother is the mother is slashers.”

Leslie Grossman spoke to The Palm Restaurant on her 1984 involvement: “Who knows who’s involved? Who even knows who’s gonna be part of the show this year? We’ll find out when we find out if we get to be involved with the show.. even the people closest to Ryan don’t know what’s going to be going on in the next season.. it’s gonna be a fun slasher thing and I think that’s gonna be super, super fun.”

Alhan Bilal (who had a guest role in episode 8 of Apocalypse), according to IMDB is set to play a character called Jamie in 1984. Inside sources later confirmed that she had indeed auditioned for a role.

Also rumored to join Emma Roberts, Gus Kenworthy, Cody Fern, Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd and Sarah Paulson (who haven’t spoken on the season yet) are Adina Porter, Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, Charlie Carver, Skyler Samuels and the previously mentioned Finn Wittrock and Darren Criss.

OTHER

An attraction for 1984 is confirmed to be headed to San Diego Comic Con in late July: ‘American Horror Story: 1984 – Face the Darkness‘ has been described as ‘an immersive excursion featuring classic tropes of slasher horror, augmented by night vision goggles to turn up the terror’.

Jen Lynch (Roanoke, Cult, Apocalypse) also confirmed that she would be returning to direct one or more episode of 1984.
